1st Get Together - Dec 98
This auspicious occasion took place on Saturday December 5th in historic Hillsborough NC, former colonial capital, cradle of the American Revolution and home to both the annual Hog Festival and Team Stuttgart: Porsche, Audi, and VW mechanics extraordinaire.
Dusty, owner and refugee from ZZ Top, served as benevolent host to our assortment of suspicious-looking characters and their VW's. We boasted five Corrado's (three VR6, two G60), two A2 GTi's (both 16V I think ?), one A3 8v GTi and one A1 Cabriolet. Apologies if I missed anyone out or credited anyone with too few or too many valves.
We would have had more cars but for sick absentees. My Corrado VR6 and 2.0 Jetta 16V were left at home ill and so I was cruelly jeered and abused and made to park my 325is around back and out of sight with the wrecked parts cars and appliances. Likewise Mark Woodruff left behind his G60-less G60. We talked about the usual VW stuff: ruptured head gaskets, exploding heater cores, sunroofs and door handles that aren't, mysterious electrical problems and smells, etc. There was also much exciting discussion about forming an area club and what goodies make your VW faster on those sweet and rare occasions when it is actually running properly.
Among all this serious and heady stuff, light relief was provided by Jonathan Evans, who spent the afternoon submerged under the hood of his (very) yellow G60, emerging occasionally with G-lader in hand and manic look in the eyes, whereupon he would shake fragments of metal onto the ground and declare "told you so" like some modern day Wolfsburg Frankenstein. We started to take bets on when he would soil his sparkling white "CCA-Club" T-shirt, but amazingly it remained spotless. What a guy !
On account of the locale, we were also treated constantly to the fury of Ford and Chevy V8's and V8 wannabes, as they thundered by, Flowmasters snarling indignantly at the intrusion of all these fine examples of superior European machinery.
We agreed to pursue the club discussions and to meet again in January, possibly to check out a newly-refurbished racetrack where we can really knacker our cars. Thanks to Steve Cusick for organizing the event, Dusty for hosting and everyone who turned up and made for a very pleasant afternoon: hopefully the first of many.
